Prophecy

"Now concerning Spiritual gifts, brethren, I wouldn't have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were lead. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the self same Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. I Corinthians 12: 1-11

"Follow after charity, and desire Spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the Spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself, but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret that the church may receive edifying.

The Hebrew definition of Prophecy means "to flow forth, to lift up". The Greek definition is "to speak for another". The purpose of is to edify the church. What does it mean to edify? and who is the Church?

To edify means to educate! Education in the knowledge, wisdom and understanding of the knowledge of the truth of Almighty God, which results in the people of God (believer's who are the Church) being built up ("I will build my church" Matthew 16:18), constructed, fashioned, matured, guided, encouraged, inspired, persuaded, consoled, assured, and renewed.

This is a process! There is no end to learning. Education is a lifelong process and should only end when you do!

Through the gift of Prophecy the church is enabled to grow and to be strengthen with might by His Spirit in your inner man, you will be educated to come to know that Christ dwells in your hearts by faith, you will be rooted and grounded in love, and will comprehend will all brethren what is the breath, length, depth and height, educated to know the love of Christ, in order that (you) the church may be filled with all the fullness of God.

It is vital to the forward progression of the Church.

As believers we are to earnestly desire this gift. "Make love your aim, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy ... so that the church may be edified". I Corinthians 14:1,5

The Holyspirit functioning through you operates the gift of prophecy. The Holyspirit educates by speaking words of guidance, admonition, words of assurance, words of well-being, words of edification, exhortation and comfort, "only that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers". Ephesians 5:29

My computer defines Edification as: "moral improvement or guidance". The Greek word is Oikodome which means "the act of one who promotes another's growth in Christian wisdom, piety, happiness and holiness".

My computer defines Exhortation as: "a language intended to incite and encourage". The Greek word is paraklesis which means "persuasive discourse, stirring address, instructive, admonitory, conciliatory, powerful hortatory discourse".

My computer defines Comfort as: "to soothe in time of affliction or distress, to make strong, to invigorate, to fortify, to corroborate". The Greek word is paramuthia which means "any address, whether made for the purpose of persuading, or of arousing and stimulating, or of calming and consoling". Para actually means "alongside" and muthos means "speech, word or saying".

Even though Prophecy is paramount and we are admonished to earnestly desire it, it doesn't mean that we are to ignore the other gifts . Remember: they are all operated the by the same Spirit. So, there is no way they could be any less. As you have learned, Prophecy is the vital to the froward movement or growth of the church.

Now, that we know what Prophecy is lets examine what is not:

Prophecy is not to be confused with the Prophetic Office. The Prophet operates by the Spirit in the gift of revelation or the foretelling accompanied with other gifts as the word of knowledge and or the gift of wisdom, the gift of discerning of spirits and also the gift of prophecy. The Prophetic Office has a different purpose for the church than the gift of prophecy has. The gift of prophecy is JUST the speaking unto men for the edification, exhortation and comfort. It is not preaching, which also has a distinct purpose for the church. Preaching is for the purpose of salvation. Prophecy is not included in the five fold ministry, however; operates by the same Spirit, but for different purposes. ("And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?" (I Corinthians 12:28-30)

We can ALL have the gift of Prophecy! The gift of prophesy is for every believer. "For you can all prophesy one by one..." I Corinthians 14:31

Moreover, the gift of Prophecy is Not prediction. Again, it is the "speaking unto men for edification, exhortation and comfort".

If someone claims to speak a word to you that does not comfort you, "test it"; it is not of the Holyspirit! The Holyspirit is THE COMFORTER! It cannot operate any other way! We must TEST all things. "Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good".

If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Comforter to be with you forever - the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept him because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him for he lives with you and will be in you." John 14:15-17

"All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." John 14:25,26

"When the Comforter comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me." John 15:26

"But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment...." John 16:7,8

"But when he, the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own, he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it know to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you." John 16:13-15

The Holyspirit will always speak in accordance with The Will Of God or The Word Of God.

Now, how can you receive the gift? Just ask!

Heavenly Father,

Your Word says that "If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?"(Matthew 7:11) Your Word also says that we should covet the gift of prophecy and that prophecy is the best gift of all the nine gifts. That being so, Father it is my desire to have that gift. I ask you in boldness and in faith, in that; Your word says, "that if I ask anything in accordance with your Will , that you hear me: And if I know that you hear me, then whatsoever I ask, I know that I have the petition that I desire of you". (I John 5:14) So, Father I thank you for giving me this vital gift that will I will use to help edify, exhort and comfort your people. Today and henceforth; I will walk in this gift. In Jesus name, I pray Amen.

Now, you are equipped with the gift of prophecy! Go forth and build the people of God.

The value of prophecy is indispensable to the church. We should all desire this Spiritual Gift. The more believers who accept this gift, the more building and construction can take place amongst God's people. This not only benefits the people of God, but your city, your community, your nation and ultimately the world. The purpose of your life is to contribute to the "Forward Movement" of humanity.
